Which year is your child in?

Year 12 is the jump from GCSE. Lessons make the algebra automatic, then build pure, statistics and mechanics in step with school.

Year 12 maths in detail

Pure, statistics and mechanics, on your child’s board.

AQA, Edexcel and OCR examine the same content, with no optional modules. About two thirds of the marks are pure maths; statistics and mechanics share the rest.

  • Proof, algebra and functions

Proof by deduction and contradiction, indices and surds, quadratics, the factor theorem, partial fractions, functions and graph transformations.

  • Coordinate geometry and series

Straight lines and circles, parametric equations, arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, the binomial expansion.

  • Trigonometry, exponentials and logs

Radians, identities, compound and double angles, harmonic form, exponential growth and decay, the laws of logarithms.

  • Calculus, numerical methods and vectors

Differentiation and integration, including the chain rule and integration by parts, differential equations, numerical methods, vectors in two and three dimensions.

  • Statistics

Sampling and the large data set, data presentation, probability, the binomial and normal distributions, hypothesis testing, correlation.

  • Mechanics

Kinematics and constant acceleration, variable acceleration, forces and Newton’s laws, friction, connected particles, projectiles, moments.

How it’s examined. Three two-hour papers at the end of Year 13, all with a calculator, on AQA (7357), Edexcel (9MA0) and OCR (H240, or MEI H640). Cambridge International sets its papers out differently.

Which exam boards do you cover?

AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Cambridge International. AQA, Edexcel and OCR share the same content but set their papers out differently, so lessons use your child’s own board’s papers and mark schemes.

Do you cover statistics and mechanics as well as pure?

Yes. Every A-level Maths student sits pure, statistics and mechanics, and lessons cover all three, including the large data set your board uses.

Year 12 or Year 13: when should we start?

The autumn of Year 12 is ideal, so the algebra is automatic before the content piles up. A Year 13 start works as a focused plan built around past papers.

Can you help with Further Maths too?

Yes. Leanne teaches A-level Further Maths, the core and the options, as its own weekly lesson alongside A-level Maths.
