GCSE Maths · Years 10 and 11 · Ages 14 to 16

GCSE maths tutoring built around your child’s board, tier and target grade.

There is no such thing as “GCSE maths”. There is AQA Higher, Edexcel Foundation, OCR, Eduqas, and each one words questions and awards marks differently. We teach to the paper your child will actually sit, from the first lesson to exam day.

Sound familiar?

The reasons parents get in touch at this stage.

“Predicted a 4, needs a 5 for sixth form or college, and the mocks are in November.”
“Classwork looks fine, but the mock came back two grades lower.”
“Higher tier, stuck on a 6, and the 7 keeps slipping away in the last questions.”
“Resitting in November or June and cannot face the same revision guide again.”

A term, phase by phase

What actually happens in the first twelve weeks.

  1. Week 1

A real past paper, marked properly

Your child sits a paper from their board and tier. We mark it with the mark scheme, then rank the lost marks by topic. That list is the plan.

  2. Weeks 2 to 6

The topics worth the most marks

Not the topics they like least. The ones where the most marks are available and currently lost, taught with the board’s own wording.

  3. Weeks 7 to 11

    Timed practice, examiner marking

Past-paper questions under time, marked the way an examiner marks: method marks, accuracy marks, and the ones lost for a missing unit.

  4. Half term

    Grade estimate and next targets

A written note with a current grade estimate from real papers, what moved, and the next half term’s targets. Repeat until the exam.

How it is assessed

Three papers, one tier, and a lot of marks for method.

Every board sets three papers of 1 hour 30, and Paper 1 has no calculator. Foundation tier reaches grade 5, Higher runs from 4 to 9. Around half the marks on most questions are for method, which is why showing working is taught as a skill, not a nag.

  • Three papers, 1h30 each, 80 marks each
  • Paper 1 non-calculator, Papers 2 and 3 calculator
  • Foundation: grades 1 to 5. Higher: grades 4 to 9
  • AQA 8300, Edexcel 1MA1, OCR J560, Eduqas C300, Cambridge IGCSE 0580

A lesson, minute by minute

Sixty minutes, and your child is doing the maths for a third of it.

Recap

Last week’s practice, marked together. Anything still shaky gets ten more minutes before moving on.

One topic, worked on the shared whiteboard. Every step written out the way an examiner wants to see it.

20 minutes

Your child does it

Questions at the right difficulty, with the tutor watching the working, not just the answer.

Set and note

Two or three practice questions for the week, and the note to you goes out within the hour.

FAQ

Questions about GCSE

Foundation or Higher?

If the school has set the tier, we work to it. If it is still open, the diagnostic paper tells us. A secure 5 on Foundation beats a scraped 4 on Higher.

When should we start, Year 10 or Year 11?

Year 10 gives two years to fix gaps and build habits. Year 11 works too, but the plan becomes exam-focused from the first week.

Do you mark past papers between lessons?

Yes. Papers set as practice are marked with the board’s mark scheme, and the lost marks feed the next lesson.

What about resits?

Resit students usually know the content and lose marks on technique and timing. The plan is shorter and paper-heavy, with the November or June date as the deadline.

Which boards do you cover?

AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas and Cambridge IGCSE. If your child is on a board not listed, ask.

Your child meets the tutor, you get a plan and your weekly times, or nothing at all. No card details.
