The pay

Every lesson paid. Even the cancelled ones.

You keep 60% of what the family pays, rising to 65% after six months or 100 lessons. Our share pays for finding the families, taking the payments and doing the admin, so you never have to.

  • Paid on the 1st of every month by bank transfer, with a statement of every lesson.
  • A family cancels with less than 24 hours’ notice? You are still paid for the lesson.
  • No joining fee, no subscription, nothing to buy.

Who does what

Private tutoring, without the private-tutoring part.

You

  • Teach the lesson.
  • Write a two-line note after it.

That’s the whole list. We send your note to the parent, so they can see the progress.

The Tutors Room

  • Find the families. You never advertise.
  • Match you by subject, level, exam board and the times you give us.
  • Take every payment and chase every late one.
  • Handle rescheduling, holidays and cancellations.
  • Answer the parents’ questions.
  • Send the lesson link and the reminders.
  • Pay you on the 1st, with a statement.
  • A Head of Teaching, a qualified teacher, when you want a second view.

Is it for you?

You bring the teaching. That’s all.

You’ll need

  • Qualified teacher status (QTS or QTLS), or a PGCE with QTS on its way
  • Experience teaching your subject in a UK school
  • An enhanced DBS check, or to be happy to get one
  • The right to work in the UK
  • At least two hours a week you can keep for the school year

You won’t need

  • Your own students
  • A website or social media
  • A way to take card payments
  • To chase anyone for money

Questions teachers ask

Am I employed by you?

No. You tutor as a self-employed teacher: you choose your hours, you can turn a lesson down, and you pay your own tax. We send a statement of your lessons each month and pay it by bank transfer.

Can I do this alongside my school job?

Yes. Most lessons are on weekday evenings and at weekends, which suits teachers working full time.

Do I need a DBS check?

Yes, an enhanced DBS with a barred list check. If you are on the DBS Update Service we can check it online; if not, we will talk you through getting one.

What do I need at home?

A laptop or computer with a webcam, reliable broadband and a quiet space. A pen tablet or visualiser helps for subjects with a lot of written working, but is not essential.

How soon could I start?

As soon as your checks are done. How quickly we match you depends on your subject, the levels you teach and the hours you give us.
