Many schools start the GCSE course in Year 9. Whatever is shaky now, from fractions to solving equations, gets carried straight into the exam course.
Year 9 is the best-value year for tutoring. The GCSE course assumes all of KS3 is secure, so a gap fixed now saves months of catch-up in Year 11, when the pressure is real.

What Year 9 covers
- Everything from Years 7 and 8, made secure and fast
- Quadratics: expanding, factorising, solving
- Simultaneous equations and graphs of linear and quadratic functions
- Pythagoras and an introduction to trigonometry
- Standard form, surds and index laws
- Probability with tree diagrams and Venn diagrams, and statistics
How the first lessons go
- 1A short diagnostic across number, algebra, ratio, geometry and statistics, so we know exactly which strand slipped.
- 2Rebuild that strand from the last point it made sense, then move forward properly with fluency practice.
- 3Get ahead of the class: the topics school teaches next half term, taught first, so lessons at school become revision.
How Year 9 is assessed
No national exam, but the end-of-year assessment usually fixes the GCSE tier and set. Higher tier goes up to grade 9; Foundation stops at grade 5. Getting into the right tier in Year 9 matters more than most parents realise.

Should we start GCSE-style work in Year 9?
Yes, once KS3 is secure. We begin using GCSE questions from the board your school uses, so the format holds no surprises in Year 10.
Which exam board will we use?
Whichever your school uses: AQA, Edexcel, OCR or Eduqas. Ask the maths department if you are not sure, or we will work it out on the free call.
My child is aiming for Higher tier. Is that realistic?
Usually, if the algebra is secure by the end of Year 9. That is what we focus on. We tell you plainly after the diagnostic where things stand.
