Year 8 is where algebra stops being simple and ratio, percentages and geometry start needing real reasoning. It is also the year most schools finalise sets for GCSE.
If your child was fine in Year 7 and is now “not getting it”, the usual cause is a step that was never made secure: solving equations with the unknown on both sides, or fractions inside algebra. We find that step and fix it.

How Year 8 is assessed
No national exam. End-of-year tests decide the set for Year 9, and in many schools the set for GCSE. That set decides whether your child is entered for Foundation (grades 1 to 5) or Higher (grades 4 to 9).

Questions parents ask
My child is in a low set. Can tutoring move them up?
Often, yes. Sets are decided on test results, and test results respond quickly to one-to-one teaching. We tell you honestly after the first month whether it is realistic.
How is Year 8 different from Year 7?
The topics need more than one step and more reasoning: equations with the unknown on both sides, multi-step percentage problems, angle proofs. Students who coasted through Year 7 can hit a wall here.
How long until we see a difference?
Confidence usually shifts within four to six lessons. Test scores follow at the next school assessment. You get a short note after every lesson so you can see it happening.
