What is inside the checklist

  • Ten marks you can stop giving away. The slips that cost marks for students who do know the maths. Each one shows the line that loses the mark, the line that keeps it, and the fix.
  • Know your papers. How many papers, how long, and which one is non-calculator, for AQA, Edexcel and OCR.
  • The night before. What to pack and what to check.
  • A three-week plan. What to do each week between now and the mock.

How to use it in the three weeks before the mock

  1. Week 1: sit one full paper, timed.

Mark it, then list every question that lost marks with the topic next to it.

  2. Week 2: fix the three topics that cost the most.

Do ten questions on each, then redo the questions that went wrong on the paper without looking at the solution.

  3. Week 3: sit a second full paper.

Compare the two lists. What is still on the list is what to ask a teacher or tutor about.

Who the checklist is for

  • Year 11 students sitting GCSE maths mocks this term.
  • Parents who want to know what to check, without re-learning the maths themselves.

Who is the checklist for?

Year 11 students sitting GCSE maths mocks, and parents who want to know what to check without re-learning the maths themselves.

Which exam boards does it cover?

AQA, Edexcel and OCR GCSE maths. The ten mistakes apply to every board, and the Know your papers page sets out the papers for each of the three.

What are the ten marks students give away in GCSE maths mocks?

Squaring a bracket, squaring a negative on the calculator, rounding too early, sharing in a ratio, dividing an inequality by a negative, working back from a percentage change, converting units of area, significant figures, losing a solution by dividing by x, and not showing working. The guide shows the fix for each one.

How should my child use it before the mock?

Over three weeks. Sit one full paper under timed conditions and list every question that lost marks. Practise the three topics that cost the most. Then sit a second paper and compare the two lists.
