Cheaper options: groups and centres

In a group your child shares the tutor. One-to-one costs more because the whole lesson is spent on their gaps.

How much tuition do families buy?

  • Tutoring is common. 29% of secondary school students in England and Wales have had private tutoring at some point, and Year 11 is the most likely year for it, at 25%.Sutton Trust: Private Tutoring 2026
  • How long it lasts. The Sutton Trust's guidance to schools is a course of frequent sessions of up to an hour, over six to twelve weeks.Sutton Trust: Tutoring, the new landscape (2023)
  • What that costs. One lesson a week for twelve weeks comes to about £411 at the UK average of £34.23, or £480 at our £40.

What you should get for the money

The hourly price tells you little by itself. Before you pay anyone, check four things.

  • A named, qualified tutor. Ask for the tutor's name, their teaching qualification and how long they have taught the GCSE course.
  • The same tutor every week. Progress comes from someone who knows where your child's gaps are and picks up where the last lesson stopped.
  • Your exam board. Lessons should follow the board your child sits, whether that is AQA, Edexcel or OCR.
  • A way to see progress. A short note after each lesson, and a regular check against the target grade.
