GCSE maths: Foundation or Higher tier?
Which grades each tier can give, who decides, the marks needed in June 2026, and what the papers look like for AQA, Edexcel and OCR.

In short
GCSE maths has two tiers. Foundation awards grades 1 to 5 and Higher awards grades 4 to 9, so a grade 4 or 5 can be reached on either. The school decides which tier to enter a student for, and all three papers are sat at the same tier. A Higher student who falls just short of grade 4 can still be given a grade 3. Below that, the result is ungraded.

Grade 7 and above can only be reached on Higher. Grades 1 and 2 can only be reached on Foundation.
Who decides, and when
- The school decides. Ofqual staff, replying on Ofqual's own blog, said there is nothing in law on the point, so it is for the school to decide the tier, and that the Department for Education expects it to do so in consultation with the student.Ofqual blog: GCSE maths, choosing the right tier
- One tier for all three papers. A student cannot sit some papers at Foundation and others at Higher. All papers are taken at the same tier in the same series.AQA: GCSE Mathematics 8300 at a glance
