Chapter 23 · Vectors4 marks

Given that MNP is a straight line, find the value of k.

BN = ⅝(a − b)✓ 1 mark
MN = ⅛a + ¹⁹⁄₈b✓ 1 mark
MP = ½a + (2 + 2k)b✓ 1 mark
k = 4 × 2 = 8✗ 0 marks
!Where most students lose it: they compare the b parts before the a parts. 3 marks out of 4, not 4.

Sound familiar?

Revised for weeks. Still lost the marks.

“I knew the method. I still didn’t get the mark.”

A method mark needs the step written down. Not in your head.

“I got the right answer and still lost a mark.”

Rounded too early, or the answer line asked for something else.

“I ran out of time on the last four.”

Five calculations where three would do. The examiners say so.

That isn’t a maths problem. It’s a marking problem. After every exam the examiners publish exactly where students lost marks, question by question. Almost nobody reads it. We read all nine reports from the last three years and turned them into this.

In the examiners’ own words

  • “This question provided a high level of challenge.”

    Pearson Edexcel examiners’ report, Paper 3H 2025, question 23

  • “Those learners that gained full marks should be congratulated.”

    Pearson Edexcel examiners’ report, Paper 2H 2025, question 19

  • “Learners carried out 5 or more calculations when only 3 were needed.”

    Pearson Edexcel examiners’ report, Paper 2H 2025, question 19

  • “Many responses struggled to determine the value of k for the final mark.”

What you get

80 pages. Every mark explained.

1

The map

The 25 question types the examiners flagged in the last three years, each with their own line on it. Two pages that show where the marks go before you attempt a single question.

2

25 questions, marked like the real thing

For each type: a fresh exam-style question with space to attempt it, then the same question marked the examiner’s way. Every method mark and accuracy mark labelled, and a red line at the exact step most students lose it. Then two more to practise, with answers.

3

Your marks tracker

After each chapter you tick: got it, lost the method mark, lost the accuracy mark, ran out of time. By the end you have your own list of what to fix before the exam.

What a chapter looks like

Three pages per question type. Attempt it on page one. Page two is the marking. Page three is practice. One chapter is one evening.

  • ✓A mark for the method: the step is written down, even if the number is wrong.
  • ✓A mark for the answer: the right value, in the form the question asked for.
  • ✗Where it goes wrong, and the one habit that stops it.
Chapter 9 · Reverse percentages3 marks

A bike costs £440 after a 10% increase. Work out the price before the increase.

110% = £440✓ 1 mark
1% = £4✓ 1 mark
100% = £400✓ 1 mark
Most students write 90% of £440 = £396. The examiners call it out every year. 0 marks.

It’s for you if

  • You’re in Year 11 doing Higher, on any board, or resitting.
  • You’re on a 4 to 7 and want the next grade.
  • You know the topics but the marks don’t show up.
  • You’d rather do 25 real-style questions properly than 200 badly.

It’s not for you if

  • You’re doing Foundation. It’s a different paper; don’t buy this.
  • You want someone to teach you the topics from scratch.
  • You want a predicted paper. Nobody honest sells one.

Questions before you buy

Which exam board is it for?

Year 11 Higher on any board. The questions are written in the style of the Edexcel Higher papers, and the Higher content is the same across AQA, Edexcel and OCR. International GCSE students sit the same topics.

Are these real past paper questions?

No, and that’s deliberate. Exam board papers can’t be sold, and you can get them free anyway. These are original questions written in the style of the question types the examiners flagged, so the marking lessons transfer to whatever comes up.

Why not just do free past papers?

Do those too. A past paper tells you your score. It doesn’t tell you that you lose the same method mark every time, or why. This book is the marking, not the paper: where the marks go, and the one habit per question type that stops them going.

Can’t I ask ChatGPT?

It can solve a question. It doesn’t know which 25 question types the examiners flagged across nine reports, or where the method marks sit in the mark scheme, or that most students stop one line early on vectors. That took qualified teachers and a lot of reading. It’s 80 pages for £12.

I’m doing Foundation. Will it help?

No. Foundation is a different paper with different questions. Please don’t buy this for Foundation.

How do I get it, and when?

Pay on this page and the workbook is emailed to you within a minute. It’s yours to keep, on any device, and you can print it. Check your spam folder if it hasn’t arrived in five minutes; reply to the email if it still hasn’t.

I’m a parent. Is this worth it for my child?

If they’re on Higher and the marks don’t match the effort, yes. It’s 25 short, finishable tasks with instant feedback, which is the thing revision usually lacks. It costs less than one tutoring hour, and if it doesn’t get used, email within 30 days and you get the £12 back.

Who made it?

The Tutors Room, an online maths school. The questions are written and checked by our qualified maths teachers (PGCE, QTS) and marked against full mark schemes. Our examiner’s-eye videos on Instagram are where most people find us.

What if it’s not what I expected?

Email us within 30 days and we refund the £12, no questions, and you keep the file.

The marks are already yours. Stop giving them away.
